Major research centre nodes slated for South Australia

Funding for new Cooperative Research Centres announced

The Australian Government, South Australian Government, and industry and research partners have committed more than $500 million towards two new Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) with a major South Australian presence – the Additive Manufacturing CRC and the Solutions for Manufacturing Advanced Regenerative Therapies (SMART) CRC.

Cooperative Research Centres are a longstanding Australian Government initiative designed to direct and attract research funding to some of the nation’s most advantageous industries.

    Additive Manufacturing CRC

    Total project value: $271 million

South Australian university partners: University of South Australia, Flinders University, University of Adelaide.

The Additive Manufacturing CRC is an industry-led collaborative research funding organisation advancing Australia’s additive manufacturing sector, also known as 3D printing.

Its mission is to build a world class additive manufacturing industry that supports Australian businesses to bring cutting-edge, high-value products, processes and services to global markets.

    SMART CRC

    Total project value: $238 million

South Australian university partners: University of South Australia, University of Adelaide.

The SMART CRC will be Australia’s critical industry-focused research centre, developing manufacturing solutions for advanced regenerative therapies.

The CRC will bring together Australian and multinational biotechnology and pharmaceuticals companies with the nation’s preeminent scientists, engineers and clinical researchers to accelerate regenerative therapies for cancer, heart disease, arthritis and other age-related conditions.

Through the Research and Innovation Fund, the Department of State Development strengthens CRC applications with the potential to have significant positive impact on South Australian research institutions, businesses and community members.

Over the next three years, $600,000 in South Australian Government funding will support the Additive Manufacturing CRC and SMART CRC to establish South Australian nodes – strengthening our local research capabilities and businesses.
