Finalists announced for the 2025 SA Science Excellence and Innovation Awards

66 outstanding professionals applied, but only 18 could be selected.

Today, South Australia’s top scientists, innovators, researchers and educators were named the finalists of the 2025 SA Science Excellence and Innovation Awards.

Demonstrating SA’s diversity of scientific endeavour and research, these professionals are leading the way in improving the world we live in whilst contributing to the ongoing success of South Australia’s science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM).

Along with bold, impactful and passionate finalists, this year’s awards introduce two new categories to recognise and celebrate professionals excelling mid-career and innovatively collaborating to deliver translational outcomes.

At the heart of our research and innovation are mid-career level individuals – which is why this year, the South Australian Mid-Career STEMM Professional of the Year Award has been introduced. The finalists for this category are improving side effects of cancer treatment, using virtual reality to redefine how we treat osteoarthritis, and designing green chemical systems to treat and reuse water.

To showcase the power of innovative partnerships, the two previous categories of Innovator of the Year and Excellence in Science and Industry Collaboration have been combined to form the new Excellence in Collaborative Innovation Award. The finalists for this category are the epitome of collaborative excellence and out-of-the-box thinking, using artificial intelligence to accurately and non-invasively diagnose endometriosis, developing world-first tests for treatment of patients with Motor Neurone Disease, and improving physical activity and screen time outcomes for children.

“These awards are a celebration of the outstanding scientists we have here in South Australia,” stated Professor Craig Simmons, Chief Scientist of South Australia.

“It’s been gratifying this year to be able to select finalists who are in the middle of their careers, juggling multiple responsibilities while still making major breakthroughs that promise to change lives.”

“Recognising the hard work and dedication of our STEMM educators is incredibly important to me as they nurture and inspire the next generation of scientists and researchers.”

“Congratulations to all the finalists – I look forward to celebrating with you in November.”

Winners of the 2025 SA Science Excellence and Innovation Awards will be announced at an Awards Ceremony on Friday, 14 November 2025 in Adelaide. Tickets to the event will be made available to the public from September.
