    Supporting the Whyalla community through the challenges associated with the Whyalla Steelworks

    The South Australian Government is committed to maintaining the industrial and supply chain capability within Whyalla and South Australia by providing immediate financial assistance to creditors of GFG.

    A Whyalla Emergency Response Package has been announcement to provide significant funding to support businesses and workers throughout this period of administration.

    The package will support businesses through the following support programs and initiatives.

    Mr John Chapman OAM, the South Australian Industry Advocate as the Regional Coordinator has been appointed to lead the coordination of the Whyalla Emergency Response.

    The Regional Coordinator will liaise with the community, employees and businesses to connect them with key support services.


    Funding programs

    • Business Creditor Assistance Payment Scheme providing payments to Whyalla businesses with debts owed
    • Whyalla Small Local Business Support Grants for businesses experiencing a reduction in turnover
    • Deferral of State Taxes and Government Business Charges impacted businesses may apply for deferral of current year state taxes and charges.


    Business support and assistance

    • More on the ground resources Whyalla to support businesses access supports, lodging applications and processing of grants and loans
    • Dedicated mental health and family support to help workers and local small business owners
    • Professional financial and legal advisory services to assist businesses navigate current challenges and support business development and diversification opportunities
    • A Job Matching and Skills Hub providing a one-stop-shop for information and access to all State and Australian Government services for impacted workers.


    Skills and Training

    • Career Transition Service available to workers navigating redundancy, job loss or reduced hours
    • Free accredited training to workers and contractors from the Whyalla steelworks and its supply chain who have been impacted by loss of work
    • Apprentice Retention Program to connect any impacted apprentices with new host employers.
