But in order to harness the enormous economic benefits this technology can bring, we must also ensure we are mitigating the risks inherent in the technology, as well as the real fears of industry and consumers about its impact.
The South Australian Government has committed $5 million towards the Responsible AI Research Centre (RAIR Centre), as part of a $20 million combined investment with CSIRO and the University of Adelaide, bringing together experts to conduct world-leading research to ensure AI implementation addresses misinformation risks, considers diverse perspectives, and can explain its actions.
The RAIR Centre will focus on building foundational AI models and better understanding of how AI works through four key themes:
- Tackling misinformation: developing methods that enable attribution of trusted data sources to AI-generated content to avoid misinformation and misuse.
- Safe AI in the real world: exploring the foundational science questions that underpin how AI interacts with the physical world, linking to areas including robotics.
- Diverse AI: developing AI systems that can accurately assess their own knowledge limitations and reliably express uncertainty, helping to reduce ‘AI hallucinations’.
- AI that can explain its actions: developing AI that understands cause-and-effect relationships, particularly in complex and dynamic environments.
The RAIR Centre will be located at Adelaide’s Lot Fourteen, backed with world-leading expertise from CSIRO’s data and digital specialist arm, Data61, and the University of Adelaide’s Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML).
South Australia is already a recognised leader in artificial intelligence research thanks to AIML’s global reputation in supporting businesses to develop AI-enabled products and services, automate processes and improve productivity.
The RAIR Centre will build on and reinforce this reputation, while forging new opportunities to be at the forefront of responsible AI research, driving investment and economic growth.
