Register for success at Small Business Week

The contribution of South Australia’s almost 160,000 small businesses to our economy cannot be overstated.

From making our morning coffees to fixing a blocked drain to building extensions on our houses – for every stage of life, no matter how big or small, chances are we’ll need to call on the products or services of a small business.

But it’s also incredibly hard work – I have run my own small business in the past, and I understand how hard it can be to truly switch off at the end of the day.

Outside of business as usual, how do we find the time to build our capability, to plan for the future, to take steps to become more sustainable when we are swamped with the day-to-day?

That’s what Small Business Week is all about. Held between 22-26 September, the week is dedicated to empowering the small business community, no matter where you are in your journey.

Small Business Week is a perfect opportunity to set aside some time to work on your business, hear from experts and those who have faced challenges and thrived, or just simply to network and be inspired.

Events will be held across both metropolitan Adelaide and regional South Australia, but if you can’t make it to any of the in-person sessions, there will also be a suite of online, on-demand content available which you can consume anytime and anywhere.

The week starts with the Small Business welcome event and expo on Monday 22 September, which will include a keynote address from leading demographer and commentator Bernard Salt, who will share insights and analysis on the local and global trends that are guiding the way we do business. He will be followed by a panel discussion with some of the state’s leading small and family business owners.

There will also be sessions covering strategic planning, business growth, diversification, building and retaining strong teams, finance, cashflow and capital, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, and succession planning – all designed to help you grow, adapt and thrive in today’s business landscape.

Small Business Week is one of the initiatives flowing from the South Australian Government’s Small Business Strategy 2023-2030. The strategy was shaped through extensive engagement with the sector, including a statewide online survey, roundtable discussions and in-depth interviews.

For two years, the strategy has been delivering programs and initiatives to help small business owners to build their capability, adapt to rising costs, adopt digital technologies such as AI, take care of their mental wellbeing, and make solid plans for future growth.

There’s no doubt the world is rapidly changing, and new challenges and opportunities are constantly arising.

We are dedicated to adapting the strategy so we can be flexible in our ability to respond to these challenges, and ultimately ensuring that it remains a living, evolving document.

Small Business Week addresses the pressing issues that face small business owners in 2025. But most importantly, it offers an opportunity to pause, step off the treadmill and think deeply about your business goals, while meeting and hearing from others facing similar challenges.

I encourage you to explore the full program and see what’s on offer.
