The Skills and Training Academy is central to the South Australian Defence Industry Workforce and Skills Report and Action Plan, a partnership between the Australian and South Australian Governments to grow the skilled workforce to meet our commitments under the AUKUS agreement.
The Academy, which will accept up to 1000 students each year, will be at the centre of the training effort for the South Australia’s submarine future.
The hundreds of young people who will come through this facility will benefit from hands-on skills and classroom-based learning with state-of-the-art workshops as well as a large central submarine mock-up area that will simulate the submarine construction yard.
The campus will be designed and delivered by Australian Naval Infrastructure, supported by build partners BAE Systems and ASC Pty Ltd to draw on their deep experience and ensure training aligns with industry requirements.
Coinciding with the start of the ground works and to help build a strong and resilient industrial base for Australia’s submarines, the Australian Government also launched the AUKUS Submarine Industry Strategy, which aims to give businesses the confidence to invest in their own technical capabilities, personnel and facilities so they can grow and enter AUKUS supply chains.
The Strategy outlines a framework of priorities through five critical lines of effort:
- Creating demand clarity for industry
- Boosting investment attractiveness in critical areas
- Simplifying regulation
- Growing the skilled workforce
- Integrating Australian industry into US and UK supply chains
The Strategy will guide one of the most complex and consequential industrial transformations in Australian history, and as the headquarters of Australia’s AUKUS commitments, South Australia stands to benefit greatly from the opportunities that will flow from this Strategy.
