New program to help grow SA’s tradie workforce

Significant residential land releases, new housing, major public infrastructure projects – South Australia has a long to-do list when it comes to construction.

In addition to continued support for South Australians to get the skills they need to embark on a construction career, a new program is helping connect skilled migrants with opportunities in our state’s construction sector.

The South Australian Government has partnered with Master Builders SA on the BuildConnect program, which aims to bolster the local workforce with the recruitment of 200+ workers by:

    • partnering with at least 100 South Australian employers
    • matching skilled migrants with suitable job vacancies
    • providing recruitment assistance, support and coordination services to participants and partner employers
    • delivering in-person industry events to connect participants with prospective employers, industry leaders and peers.

Master Builders SA CEO Will Frogley says that the program will be fundamental to delivering the significant projects underway and on the horizon in South Australia.

“We’re entering a time of unprecedented opportunity to create a more prosperous SA – however, to seize the day, we must develop a more capable, skilled building and construction workforce,” said Mr Frogley.

“We need to attract 30,000 workers to our industry over the next three years to meet demand, including 15,000 skilled tradies.

“The State Government and Master Builders SA are already throwing the kitchen sink at trying to attract local talent into apprenticeships and other occupations through gateway programs like Born2Build, but we can’t hit those numbers without a concerted skilled migration focus.

“Build Connect will link more than 200 onshore and offshore migrant construction workers with SA businesses crying out for skills.

“Many of these workers are already in South Australia, but not in their chosen field. This program aims to put them on a path to success – not second best.”

Build Connect is funded under the South Australian Government’s Skilled Migration Talent and Industry Connection Program, and will supplement local initiatives that are enabling South Australians to enter the industry and bolster our workforce.
