    Making cyber security everyone’s business

Cyber security is one of the fastest-growing sectors across the world and will be a huge source of economic growth.

But with cyber criminals becoming more sophisticated, this growth goes hand-in-hand with the increasing need to develop robust cyber security proficiency across all sectors and in small businesses.

Recognising these twin needs, the Department of State Development (DSD) supports a range of activities to not only develop the next generation of cyber security professionals, but to arm businesses with the capability to protect their own data and assets.

Last month, DSD partnered with national cyber security firm Cygenus to host South Australia’s part of the National Missing Persons Hackathon.

This ‘capture the flag’ event brings together ethical hackers to gather open-source intelligence and find new leads on real missing person cases. During the six-hour event, participants scour online information to uncover clues in real time, with real data, honing their open-source intelligence capabilities and developing critical cyber skills.

Any leads discovered during the event are handed to the Australian Federal Police and National Missing Persons Coordination Centre.

DSD also delivers regular networking events for cyber professionals, such as Cyber Pivot – a curated speed networking event designed for people pivoting their careers into the cyber sector, giving them the opportunity to connect and pitch themselves to potential future employers.

The Cyber Industry Capability Matrix contains information about leading South Australian organisations and the areas of cyber security they specialise in, including governance and identification, protection, detection and response, and cyber research.

The matrix helps businesses to connect with the local expertise they need to keep their systems and data secure.

There are also several options for businesses to develop their knowledge and capability in the cyber security space.

The Australian Cyber Collaboration Centre, based at Lot Fourteen, helps businesses to understand and navigate the cyber specialist ecosystem to address their specific cyber needs.

The Centre delivers the Cyber Uplift Step Program – an initiative of South Australia’s Small Business Strategy – which provides affordable cyber security education to help small businesses to begin or build on their journey to cyber resilience.

Customers of the GigCity network can access free cyber security workshops and the CyberOnRamp service, an affordable cyber security management service empowering businesses to implement and maintain digital safeguards.

DSD is also partnering with ScamWatch to deliver a free presentation later this month to small to medium enterprises on the current cyber threats facing this cohort.

The theme for 2024’s Cyber Security Awareness Month is cyber security is everyone’s business. DSD is committed to living up to this theme, providing support to businesses of all sizes to help protect their digital assets, and developing critical expertise in this important area.
