Latest export figures reward SA’s diversification efforts

The European Union – the world’s second largest consumer market after the US – has become South Australia’s newest billion-dollar export market, jumping by $183 million, or 22 per cent, in the year to March 2025.

Coming on the back of an announcement by the Australian Government of renewed trade negotiations with the European Union, this growth was driven by increased exports in critical sectors like machinery and power equipment, grains, metal ores and nuts to leading EU economies Belgium, France and Germany.

Canada has also leapfrogged several other countries in export value, jumping 94 per cent from 15th to fifth largest export market in the last 12 months.

This increase is thanks to a renewed push to boost trade with our Commonwealth partner, combined with global trade dynamics and the continued strength of our produce, providing more diversity for the state’s exporters.

Our exports to China – our largest two-way trading partner – have also continued to surge, growing 15 per cent to $4.11 billion in the first full year since tariffs were removed on Australian wine.

South Australia exported 99.5 million litres of wine to China over the last 12 months, reaching near record levels and rewarding the patience and resilience of local wine exporters over a challenging and uncertain period.

Exports to India also jumped by more than $200 million over the period to reach $1.27 billion – a new record and the result of concerted effort to ramp up trade with the world’s fastest growing economy.

Lentils, wheat and almonds top our exports to India, including a shipment of more than $21 million of South Australian lentils, making us the first state to ship lentils to India since tariffs dropped by 50 per cent.
