Facilitated each year by the Department of State Development, the SA Science Excellence and Innovation Awards celebrate the outstanding contributions of individuals and teams working in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) fields, showcasing their impact on the state’s scientific community and beyond.
A new award category in 2025 will recognise a mid-career individual who has demonstrated research and innovation excellence in any STEMM field from any sector, including industry, government or academia.
The South Australian Mid-Career STEMM Professional of the Year is open to individuals who can demonstrate capabilities in leadership and collaboration, and translational outcomes from their work.
In addition, the previous Innovator of the Year and the Excellence in Science and Industry Collaboration categories have been realigned as the single Excellence in Collaborative Innovation Award, in recognition that innovation often manifests through a team effort, rather than as an individual achievement.
Applications can be entered in the following categories:
Winners receive prize money to support future work or career aspirations—$25,000 for the South Australian Scientist of the Year and $10,000 each for other category winners.
Chief Scientist for South Australia Professor Craig Simmons said he was "thrilled to unveil a new addition to the 2025 SA Science Excellence and Innovation Awards—a category celebrating Mid-Career STEMM Professionals."
"These individuals are at the heart of innovation, skilfully balancing their own ground-breaking work with teaching, mentoring, and leadership," he said.
"This award offers a chance to pause, reflect on their incredible achievements so far, and share their bold visions for the future.
"Let’s continue to showcase and celebrate South Australia's exceptional STEMM talent. If you've ever considered applying, 2025 is YOUR year. Don’t miss this opportunity to shine!"
Applications are now open and will close on Monday, 28 April 2025.
