A collaboration between Human Services Training Advisory Council, NT and CHARTTES Training Advisory Council, NT used a workshop approach to develop a professional development resource. VET and LLN practitioners from a breadth of RTO environments were brought together through a series of workshops to collaborate on the development of integrated assessments.

Workshop experiences were used as the basis of a ‘how to’ resource that could be applied across industries, workplace settings and job roles. Based on learnings from the workshops, a six-step model was created.

Through a series of workshops and networking activities, eleven VET practitioners and two LLN practitioners worked together to look at using the Foundation Skills Training Package in vocational programs. Participants formed themselves into two learning groups – the Lunch Club and the Breakfast Club – each comprising an LLN practitioner and a number of VET practitioners. Working collaboratively, the groups developed a 10 step process for identifying and incorporating units from the Foundation Skills Training Package to address learners’ foundation skills.

Project participants identified opportunities to use the Foundation Skills Training Package in their own RTO and shared their progress and learnings with the groups as they explored possibilities and found workable solutions.

Skills Tasmania brought together a project team including language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) consultants and three Tasmanian RTOs to design, deliver and evaluate a professional development program as a pilot to inform future workforce development activity. The pilot program used a workshop model to give practitioners an opportunity to build their skills and knowledge and to gather evidence of their competency in the unit TAELLN401A and the equivalent unit TAELLN411.
